Damase on the Harp: Chantal Mathieu and Friends

Following the success of their tribute concert to Jean-Michel Damase at the Hong Kong World Harp Congress, Chantal Mathieu and friends (Veronika Lemishenko, Sakuya Koda and Brigitte Buxtorf) have released a selection of his works for harp on disc. “I find myself making more and more thematic recordings”, Chantal explains. “For me, it is an important way to deepen my understanding of the composer’s music. You can take up things you haven’t played for ages, like the Sicilienne Variée or the Aubade – I think I last played the Sicilienne in 1976! You revisit them after a whole career, you intersperse them with other relevant works, and this gives you more idea about everything. Also, there is much more variety and depth to Damase than he is commonly given credit for. He isn’t just the new Poulenc – there is a lot of drama, considerable profundity and he can be very modern, too.”

The Camac e-store is currently undergoing a facelift, so this beautiful disc will not feature there until the New Year. However, you can order it directly from [email protected], until we close for holidays on December 22nd!
